It’s been a little more than two years since Hollywood implemented its RecycleBank program, and for many residents, it pays to be green.The city was the first in Broward County to offer its residents an opportunity to be rewarded just for recycling. The program made recycling easier by no longer requiring items to be sorted into separate bins. With single-stream recycling, residents put all recyclables into 95-gallon carts.”When I came up with this idea shortly after being elected mayor, I would have never believed that we could have accomplished so much,” Mayor Peter Bober said. “The program is a major success story. We have proved that we can get people to recycle when you can make it fun and easy.”

The program rewards residents for recycling by offering points that can be redeemed at local retailers.

The program showed immediate results, officials said.

During the first month, the city reported that it increased its recycling by 127 percent over the previous year.

Paul Farren participates in the program and said it’s a wonderful idea.

“Recycling is extremely important,” Farren said. “It is one of the first things that we need to do for energy conservation. And it has substantially increased the recycling of private homes, so what’s not to like?”

Bober hopes to expand the program.

“The next thing on my hit list is to expand the program to commercial dwellings and multi-family units,” Bober said. “They can make a huge impact. … There’s a cost to recycling, but there’s an even bigger cost by not being environmentally conscious.”
