2011 National Winners

2011 Maintenance Mania National Champion (center)LAS VEGAS, NV – Jose Torreblanca earned the title of national champion Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the National Apartment Association’s (NAA) annual Maintenance Mania® competition. Torreblanca, a member the Indiana Apartment Association and employee of Van Rooy Properties, was among 20 people who qualified from a pool of nearly 4,000 competitors nationwide to battle in Las Vegas, for 2011’s title. Second and third place titles were awarded to Enrique Alarcon of Van Rooy Properties in Indiana and David Berryman of The Kamson Corporation in New Jersey, respectively.

The competition, offered by NAA and presenting sponsor HD Supply Facilities Maintenance, was held during the 2011 NAA Education Conference & Exposition. It consisted of eight maintenance-focused challenges that tested competitors’ maintenance skills and knowledge of the industry as they competed for the national title and $7,000 in grand prizes, courtesy of the presenting and national sponsors. The total prize package for winners and spectators totaled nearly $20,000.

Racing against the clock, these highly skilled maintenance professionals competed to see who was fastest at the Armor Concepts door jamb installation, Kwikset Smartkey key control deadbolt test, Price Pfister faucet repair, GE appliance repair, Kidde smoke and carbon monoxide safety installation, Fluidmaster toilet repair, and Seasons ceiling fan installation. The finale of the event featured a race car competition, sponsored by Philips, where competitors launched model cars that they built — using at least three maintenance products — down a pinewood derby-style track.

“Maintenance professionals are essential to the success and viability of the multifamily housing industry,” said NAA President Doug Culkin, CAE. “NAA is extremely proud to be able to shine a light on such an outstanding group of individuals through the Maintenance Mania® program.”

2011’s  national championship in Las Vegas attracted a record audience of more than 600 spectators into the Maintenance Mania arena. “As the presenting sponsor, we are amazed at how this program has grown over the past 5 years, and proud of how it connects maintenance professionals and local apartment associations within the apartment industry,” said Anesa Chaibi, President & CEO HD Supply Facilities Maintenance.

The finals in Las Vegas marked the end of the fifth season of the Maintenance Mania® competition. Qualifying for the competition began in August 2010, taking place at almost 60 events across the country. The 2012 national championship will take place this June in Boston, MA.
